The Intercept is an award-winning news organization dedicated to holding the powerful accountable through fearless, adversarial journalism. Its in-depth investigations and unflinching analysis focus on politics, war, surveillance, corruption, the environment, technology, criminal justice, the media, and more. The Intercept gives its journalists the editorial freedom and legal support they need to expose corruption and injustice wherever they find it. Our work is enabled in part by the largest reader fundraising program in nonprofit digital media, with 50,000 members donating each year.

The Intercept is looking for an experienced and forward-thinking Product Director to lead the development of its website and other publishing and multimedia platforms, contributing to greater editorial impact, audience engagement, and philanthropic support. We are looking for someone inspired and motivated by The Intercept’s core mission who will partner with our editorial and business teams to advance The Intercept’s growth and sustainability.

Responsibilities:

• Set the product strategy, own the roadmap, prioritize features based on editorial and business goals, and build consensus among stakeholders across teams.

• Supervise the Lead Product Designer and external engineering team, coordinating work to ship new features on time and budget.

• Employ audience data – including A/B optimization where possible - to inform strategy, and ensure that systems work together to capture data accurately and completely at all stages of the audience funnel.

• Partner closely with membership, newsletter, and multimedia teams to augment existing efforts and develop new products as needed.

• Identify and help resolve barriers that prevent the team from launching high-quality experiences, and robust, successful products.

• Be an internal resource and partner for team leaders when they have questions about the product roadmap, platform integrations, and launch schedules.

• Build use cases and user stories around a product and communicate them effectively, while collaborating with design, editorial, engineering and other functional streams to ensure the cohesiveness of the overall user experience

• Keep abreast of evolving technologies, products and content distribution methods that enhance the digital publishing business and help envision new user experiences for our audience

Background & qualifications required:

• Experience building consumer-facing web products in some combination of startup, media, non-profit, or political settings.

• Proven ability to collaborate and build consensus across teams, while driving organizational change and innovation.

• Expertise in content management systems, digital publishing workflows, customer/constituent relationship management systems, and supporting third-party integrations.

• Excellent judgment in business decisions, ability to leverage data to measure recognized (and identify unrecognized) market opportunities

• Enthusiasm for The Intercept’s adversarial journalistic mission, and appreciation for the passion and commitment of its readers.

An ideal candidate might also have experience with:

• One or more tools in our existing stack, which includes WordPress, Piano, ActionKit, Salesforce, Parse.ly, Google Analytics, and AWS.

• Journalism, nonprofit fundraising, audience development, and/or direct-response marketing.

• Data analysis and/or data operations, especially SQL, data warehousing, and BI dashboarding.

• Privacy-protecting web development practices, particularly related to minimizing tracking and data collection of our readers, while still enabling actionable analytics
